Call for Papers: Design of Smart Materials and Structures

The ASME Journal of Mechanical Design (JMD) serves the broad design community as the venue for scholarly, archival research in all aspects of the design activity. JMD is particularly interested in papers describing the design of smart structures and systems, and recently published a September, 2009 special issue on this topic consisting of papers presented at the 2008 Smart Materials Adaptive Structures Intelligent Systems (SMASIS) conference.

Demonstrating the wide variety of topics, papers included in this special issue covered studies ranging from experimental characterization, to response modeling, to integration of sensing and response capabilities into systems and structures. Research efforts spanned a wide range of smart materials including piezoelectric, shape memory alloys, magnetorheological materials, and a wide range of uses of such materials including actuation, transport, morphing, energy harvesting, and shape, flow, and vibration control. Smart structures and systems topics included design optimization of distributed actuator systems, functional gradation, and stress relief in cellular mechanisms.

JMD welcomes similar papers presented at the 2009 SMASIS. Please submit a journal-quality version of your SMASIS paper using the ASME Journal tool. Please note on the cover page that your paper was presented at the 2009 SMASIS conference, and email the Technical Editor, Dr. Panos Papalambros at editor@asmejmd.org, so that your paper can be directed to the appropriate Associate Editor. Note that JMD limits papers to 12 journal pages, and ASME may issue page charges for more than 9 journal pages (9000 words including figures and tables).
